Overview of Basketball
Basketball is one of the most popular team sports across the globe, but here at VJC, VJ basketball is more than just that. We are more than just a team.
Is there something about your CCA you and your fellow members think most people are unaware of that you feel needs to be shared to them?
Many people think that one has to be of a certain height or build to be able to play basketball. However, truth is, anyone can learn to play the sport so long as he/she is willing to commit and persevere!
How often do you have your trainings?
We have our trainings thrice a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Our trainings usually commence at 4.30pm and end at 7.30pm. However, as we near competition periods, trainings will end slightly later at about 8pm.
Would you like to give us a glimpse of what trainings are usually like?
At the start of each training, we engage in conditioning exercises such as gym sessions, long distance running and ladder agility drills. Following that, we carry out a variety of drills to sharpen the skills of our players. These enhance our shooting, dribbling, defense abilities.
Incoming juniors would have some time to familiarise themselves with the sport and the team, as the first few trainings will mainly be focused on training players’ fundamental skills. As we near competition periods, our trainings will get more focused on tactical execution, which includes the learning of offensive tactics and the execution of such tactics by playing 3v3 and 5v5 matches.
Any additional information to take note of?
Basketball girls and boys may train together.
More about Basketball
Why did you choose to join this CCA?
We joined VJ Basketball for the love of the sport. Also, our seniors were very welcoming and friendly during CCA showcase and trials.
What would you consider to be the highlight of your CCA journey thus far?
We challenged ourselves beyond our own expectations and realised that nothing is unattainable if you’re willing to work for it. The good friends we made throughout our CCA journey certainly light up our days.
Noteworthy CCA milestones in the past year:
Our basketball boys team improved their standings in the A-division basketball competition after 3 years of stagnancy!
What about the CCA culture? What’s it like?
VJ Basketball comprises of a bonded batch of players. We have various traditions that we follow during our trainings, such as standardising our attire and counting together as we make our shots during drills. Frequent shouts of encouragement can also be heard throughout training sessions. We believe that this has and will continue to promote team spirit and gel the players to become more than just a team that trains together.
In a Nutshell
To the incoming batch of juniors who will be busy pondering over the issue of CCA selection, what words would you give to those who may be keen on entering your CCA family?
It is not too late to try out a new sport in JC, as the coach and seniors are extremely welcoming and patient in guiding new players in their basketball journey. Do not be afraid to come for our tryout session after JCO for a short yet fulfilling experience of our training before deciding on your CCA!
